Overcoming Adversity

Problems will come to us all. Jesus said in John 16:33, “In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Problems are designed to get us off course and to distract us from God’s plan. When dealing with adversity and going through times of difficulty, there are some things that we can do to overcome the circumstances of life. The first thing that we must remember is that we must not allow ourselves to be distracted. When we get distracted, our attention is diverted and we become preoccupied with the wrong things. Jesus said in Luke 9:62, “No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.” We must never lose our focus.

Another way to overcome adversity is by choosing not to waver or wander by walking casually or aimlessly. We must never let an unexpected storm dictate our life. We must trust God wholeheartedly and stop trying to figure out everything on our own. God is a faith God and He is looking for faith. We must commit our heart to the Word of God because it is true and it works. The third thing we must remember when dealing with the difficulties of life is that we should never just hear the Word. To be a success and to overcome, we must put the Word into practice. We must be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. When you only hear the Word, it is like going to a lecture with no intention of actually applying what you have heard. Only those that hear and do the Word will stand. The truth is that acting on what God has said will bring results.

The last thing we should remember in overcoming the difficult situations in life is to never become negative. Your attitude is a powerful factor in determining the outcome of any situation. You can be positive in spite of negative circumstances. Someone said, “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.” You must see beyond the problem and see the outcome based on the Word of God. Your attitude is powerful because it will carry you through times of adversity, causes you to remain steadfast, and it launches you into God’s plan for your life.

Remember that there is always some way in which you can act. When overcoming adversity, keep these things in mind.

1) Don’t get distracted.

2) Don’t waver.

3) Don’t just hear.

4) Don’t be negative.
