God's Word Is Medicine

In Proverbs 4:20-22, we are told to attend to God’s Word, listen to it, and keep it in the midst of our heart. Why are we told to do this? The passage goes on to say that those words are life and medicine to all our flesh. God’s Word is medicine and is good for heart problems, problems with the liver, kidneys, eyes, ears, bones, and so forth. Descriptions about the “medication” and how to take it will produce health and healing every time. It is important, however, to keep the following things in mind when taking God’s medicine.

1) God’s Word never changes. Psalm 119:81 says, “Forever, O Lord, they word is settled in heaven.” Kenneth E. Hagin said, “I taught the people to let their heart agree with the Word they speak out of their mouth.”

2) Accept God’s Word as truth. Jesus said in John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Don’t try to interpret scripture. Just quote it and take God’s Word for what it says.

3) It is important to hear the Word over and over. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” There was a story several years ago where a denominational pastor visited a lady who had terminal cancer and whose doctor had told her there was nothing more he could do. The pastor, however, brought her a cassette tape called “God’s Medicine,” and told her to listen to it several times a day every day. As she listened to the tape over and over again, it built faith into her heart and she was completely healed.

4) God sent His Word to heal you. Psalm 107:20 says, “He sent his Word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” A well known minister who lived in the early 20th century, Dr. Lillian B. Yoemans and her sister would take patients and get them healed by divine power instead of the day’s medicine. They simply taught these patients what the Word of God said. Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin said about these patients, “They were healed by initiating their own healing on the basis of their faith in the Word of God.”

5) Jesus is the Word of God. John 1:14 says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, ) full of grace and truth.” How did God send His Word to heal you? He sent Jesus to take your infirmities and bear your sicknesses (Isaiah 53:4). God’s Word works when you act on it confidently and consistently. Since He sent His Word and healed you, count it as done in your life and act like it is already an accomplished fact.

6) God keeps His Word. Jeremiah 1:12 says, “Then said the Lord unto me, Thou has well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.” Kenneth E Hagin said, “If we would look for as many reasons for God to keep His Word and for it to work as we do for it not to work, God’s Word would always work for us.”

7) Act on what the Word says. James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” We must simply act on what the Word of God says. There is no need to pray about it or get anyone else to pray for you. Just act!

8) God’s Word must be in your mouth and in your heart. Romans 10:8 says, “The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart; that is the word of faith, which we preach.” We cannot rely on another person’s faith to get things done in our own lives. We must believe God’s Word in our own heart. We must speak God’s Word out of our own mouths.

Knowing what the Word says and then doing it is like following the instructions for taking medicine. We cannot see the Word work in our lives until we put it into practice, and when we do, it will work for us.
