Powerful Prayer

While Jesus was on the earth, He had a powerful prayer life. He would pray before the sun came up. Even after ministering to people all day, He would pray all night. The scripture says in Luke 6:12, “And it came to pass in those days, that He went out into a mountain to pray, and continue all night in prayer to God.” Since prayer was so important to Jesus, it should be important to us. Prayer is communicating and fellowshipping with God. It is through prayer that we talk to our Heavenly Father and He talks to us. We have a “wireless” connection with the most important being in the universe. Gloria Copeland said, “If Jesus had to have that kind of prayer life to be successful, so do you.”

There are several things that we can do to experience a powerful prayer life. God wants us to spend time in the Word and spend time with Him too. Jesus said to Peter in Matthew 26:40, “So you couldn’t keep watch with me for one short hour?” Setting a goal for the amount of time you are going to pray is necessary to experience prayer that is powerful. It keeps you from distractions and keeps you from cutting your time with God too short. When you set aside a specific amount of time to pray, you say in effect, “I’m sticking with it and other things can wait.”

Another aspect of powerful prayer is being consistent. The Lord told Gloria Copeland, “In consistency lies the power.” We are admonished in the scripture to “Pray without ceasing,” (1 Thess. 5:17). What makes someone pray day after day whether they feel like it or not? The answer is that they have a desire to spend time with the Lord. You can’t be double minded about prayer and see your desires come to pass. You must determine to be consistent.

Finally, for you to pray powerful prayers, you must believe that you receive when you pray. When you pray, you are not to believe you will receive in the future, but at the very moment you pray. Most people pray and expect the answer to come later but we are to believe we receive when we pray. This involves not only thanking God for our answer but also by speaking it. Kenneth E. Hagin said, “Confession brings possession.” We have to keep speaking in line with the Word of God. If you want to pray powerful prayers that bring results, set a goal, be consistent, and believe you receive. Your prayer will not only be powerful, but successful.
